In late June 2020, representatives for the Collegiate Council and the Student Advisory Group of the University of London (UoL) emailed the ULSC committee stating that the Council is due to discuss a proposal to "cease the operation of clubs and societies through Student Central". Understandably shocked, students stated that "there had been no prior suggestion that these clubs and societies, many decades old, were imminently under threat" and that there had been "no opportunity for any feedback or input from the people that this proposal will ultimately impact the most."
However, in true UoL style, students came together in petition to save London's clubs and societies. The petition amassed over 5,000 signatures and was successful in persuading the Council "to postpone making any decision until December 2020, to allow time for a new working group comprising the University, member institutions, and student and alumni representatives to collaborate on solutions for the continuing provision of intercollegiate student activities."
Whilst the student body has been successful in buying more time, the future of ULSC remains uncertain. It is critical that Castaways remain prepared to support ULSC in whichever capacity may become necessary in the coming months and years.
The petition and open letter to the UoL Collegiate Council can be found here.
